Over my life time I have heard many sermons that support the government. These sermons are always based on Romans 13. During the summer of 1976 the church I attended held several different events to celebrate the nations 200th anniversary. One of these events included invitations to many local and state politicians. The pastor gave a short dissertation on Romans 13 where he supported government rule. In his speech he said that all governments were ordained by God.
I was a 14-year-old kid then, but because of my Dad I had a very good basic understanding of communism. And of course we were still in the cold war with Russia. ”All government ordained by God” left a huge question mark in my mind. How could God ordain something as hideous as the old USSR? What about Hitler and the Nazi’s how did that fit into God’s plan? Suddenly God was looking a little tyrannical and I really did not like that much. Our church was rather large and we had several pastors, so I started asking them questions concerning this dilemma. The answers I got were not satisfactory because there was no logic in the answers I was getting. The answers and the translation of Romans 13 did not coincide.
Finally a couple of years ago I stumbled into several different texts that showed that the translation of Romans 13 was wrong. Finally last year I found Brother Gregory at His Holy Church and Chuck Baldwin. Chuck Baldwin has an excellent book on Romans 13, you can find it here. Simply put, it boils down to a translation error.
Paul was the writer of Romans which he wrote in the Greek language. The word Paul uses in the Greek is exousia which is wrongly translated as power, authority, or government. The correct translation is liberty. Paul grew up in Taurus and was a Hellenistic Jew. The Hellenistic Jews were highly educated. Paul had learned Hebrew, Latin, Greek, and Aramaic. The form of Greek that Paul would have been taught is the Aristotle/Plato form. Aristotle and Plato both used exousia for the word liberty or the freedom of choice.
So verse one should read: Let every soul be subject unto the higher liberty. For there is no liberty but of God: the liberties that be are ordained of God. And verse two: Whosoever therefore resisteth the liberty, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Liberty is from God and God alone.
If you study the recorded history of man you will discover that governments do not grant liberty, they are notorious for taking it. Our founders understood this very well. Study the details of American history pre-1860. Find out who controlled the courts, the role of lawyers and the role of the people in the court. Find out what a jury of your peers was then verses now. Once you do you will begin to understand how much liberty has been lost.
Verses and 3 and 4 need more explanation: For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the liberty? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
God actually has an appointed system of government and Israel was originally formed under this system. It is a system that liberals hate, the Patriarchal/Matriarchal system. That’s right you parents are your rulers. Israel was originally setup under the tribal system of government. The family is the center of God’s plan for man, this is why Marxist doctrine works to tear down the family system and create dysfunctional families.
In 1 Samuel 8, Israel comes to Samuel and requests a king, they have decided they want to be like all the other nations on earth. Verse 7 is God’s response to Israel: The Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them. To put it bluntly Israel no longer wanted each man and woman to take responsibility for themselves and their families. They decided to hand responsibility over to 1 man, a king. Read chapter 8 and see the warning that God gives to the nation of Israel. God tells them exactly what a king will do to them.
We need to restore our nation to what our founders built, what we have now is a form of government that will enslave men to its will. We must reject this on all levels because it is anti-liberty and anti-freedom. It is never God’s nor our founders intention for government to have supreme control over man’s inalienable rights. Governments are appointed and anointed by men not God. In the words of Watchman Nee, man was created to rule this earth with God as their leader. We were all created to rule, why are we handing our authority over to tyrannical governments?

I just started reading Chuck’s book. I hope you haven’t spoiled the ending for me
Oh, no, no, no. Really, I have just chipped at the edge of the iceberg. I would call my little piece a mild intro to Rev. Baldwin’s book. There is really a lot to this subject. I will being doing more pieces on it later, probably next month.
Read the book, you will realize how much the church has gotten wrong over the past 80 to 100 years, maybe longer. And it will bring a new prospective to Israel as described in the Book of Judges and the beginning of 1st Samuel.
